Rants

You want to know one of the things that really draws my ire?  I mean really makes me want to uninstall your pathetic excuse for a piece of software, remove any remnants or traces of it having ever been near my machine in the first place, destroy the CD it came on with fire called down from the heavens and send ravenous zombie hordes to your home office?  It’s when some developer douche bag decides that he knows what I want more than I do.

I don’t mind if you ask me, give me a choice, but not every damn program out there needs to put one or more items into my system tray to load there every time the computer starts and slow down my startup time, eating away at memory and CPU power.  Normally this is under the guise of “speeding up the application”.  Well, I say that if you need all of those pre-loaders to make your application function acceptably, maybe you should go back to Fortran 101 and learn to write good code in the first place!

What’s worse, are the damn services that get installed and started that we don’t even know about.  Why does a simple media player need a web server?  Why does my GPS management app want or need to check out my hard drive at night?  Have all developers taken refuge at the throne of Bill Gates and Lenovo or something?

“We have a right to look at the user’s private information because they bought our crap.”  or “We don’t need to worry about writing tight, efficient bug free code, we’ll just tell the customer to by a new computer and get more kick backs from Intel.”

Not to mention the shift away from ownership to leasing.  Now when you “buy” software, you really are only “buying” a license that allows you to use it for a period of time.  Screw that noise, man.  If I am interested in a certain product and see that kind of license, ffft it’s gone and I am looking at something else.

This is just one reason why Open Source software is so damn good and popular.  Microsoft and the other behemoths of the commercial software industry want to come out and tell everyone that free software isn’t really free, it costs you more than the expensive slop that they sell.  The thing is, they don’t get it.  We don’t mean free as in dollars, we mean free as in spirit and ethics.  You get some open source code and you may spend a few bucks to implement it or get some support, or you may not, either way it is completely open.  All of the source code is there so you can make damn sure no one is spying on you or stealing information from you.  You can make a change to the app if you feel like it so that it fits better to your needs, instead of only getting “good enough”.  It’s free like the wind and water cascading down the mountain, and brothers and sisters, that’s a great place to be.

This is kind of funny, whether you like Glenn Beck or not this should be a wake up call for where our country is headed.  It seems that Radio and TV talk show host Glenn Beck made a comment comparing Reform Judaism to Radical Islam, and the comparison made a bunch of Jewish leaders mad.  Now, I read over what he said and I don’t get the big deal.  He basically compared the two and made an observation that Radical Islam and Reform Judaism were more about politics that religion.  That’s the man’s opinion, he wasn’t saying that one was bad or better than the other, just offering an observation.

So, naturally Glenn Beck apologized, and appeared to be every bit sincere and remorseful that he made a comparison that upset folk.  I mean, the guy expresses his opinion (which, last time I check, we were free to do in this country), people complain about it because basically they are going to complain about anything that isn’t glowing praise about their agenda they are pushing, and Beck basically comes back to say he was sorry, he didn’t mean to offend anyone.  Seems like a pretty normal exchange, I think we have all had something similar happen.  You say something and someone gets pissed, and you put your hands up like “Hey, didn’t mean anything man, sorry about what I said about your sister, my bad”.  After that you have another couple beers and all is good.

Not so with these guys, they came back from Beck’s apology and have said that “Anything short” of ending “Mr. Beck’s tenure at Fox News” by Rupert Murdoch “reflects an unwillingness to take seriously the harm Mr. Beck causes to many in our community and beyond”.

Wow.

No, really.  Wow.

These guys need some Prozac in a bad way.  Nice turning of the other cheek there.  Way to get along with your fellow man and all that.  The guy apologizes for not really doing anything wrong from what I can tell, and you want to pull an Imus on him.  Get a life and get a grip on reality you moonbat.  The folks ultimately behind all of this the “Jewish Funds for Justice” league need to re-evaluate the word justice.  You can read the whole article here if you like, it’s just as ludicrous.

Teachers’ hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It’s time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do – baby sit! We can get that for less than minimum wage.

That’s right. Let’s give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked; not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan — that equals 6 1/2 hours).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

Now how many do they teach in day…maybe 30? So that’s $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

LET’S SEE…. That’s $585 X 180= $105,300 peryear. (Hold on! My calculator needs new batteries).

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master’s degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year.

Wait a minute — there’s something wrong here! There sure is!

The average teacher’s salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student–a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!)

At least, that’s the way Wal-Mart sees it.  I can’t tell you how many freakin’ times I have been leaving the store, only to have that damned alarm go off telling me that I have activated their “Inventory Control” system.  It is literally bad enough that it goes off more than it doesn’t, and I am not stealing anything!  No, not only am I not stealing from Wal-Mart (though they steal from all of us, but that’s a story for another day), I am the sucker that turns around and walks back to the 90 year old door greater that has to do his TSA inspection of my bags in order to compare them to my receipt.  This gets harder when they don’t know what I bought, like technology items, and therefore have zero clue how to find them or figure it out.  Usually it ends in frustration with the old guy or gal just handing me my receipt back and saying that it’s “good enough”.

But what gets me the most riled up is the fact that I get stopped at all.  I stand there and wait in line, the cashier is the one that is supposed to do whatever voodoo that they do to clear them out of the system.  Naturally we all know that most of the cashiers/baggers at Wal-Mart couldn’t care less if they tried so it ends up sucking to be me.  Guilt until proven innocent, that’s me, and probably everyone else that shops at Mal-Wart.  Blech …

The US will spend $200 million a day on President Barack Obama’s visit to the city of Mumbai.  The huge amount of money will be spent on security, the stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit.  Talk about livin’ large!

You know, I have a saying that I have used for a long time that seems to get more and more appropriate as time goes by.  This saying is “If everyone did their job, there would be a lot less jobs to do.”  As if you couldn’t infer from that, I get frustrated by people that don’t do their jobs and thus make more work for or life harder on the rest of us.  However, there is another aspect to this, and that is people that don’t do their jobs because of sheer apathy, or some stupid reason like a morbid sense of satisfaction at watching someone elses suffering, or a(n) (im)moral high ground, or that ever popular “following orders” excuse, etc.

I am speaking of people who have lost touch with humility, compassion and really anything that tethers them to the human race, to still actually being able to be called a human being.  So far removed from humanity they have become, they are able to stand idly by, not doing something (like their jobs, their duty, whatever) while someone else gets the shaft, dies, or something similar.

In this example of course, I am speaking of South Fulton in Northwest Tennessee in Obion County where firefighters responded to a house on fire call, a house owned by Gene and Paulette Cranick, only to stand idly by and watch, letting it burn to the ground, killing three dogs and a cat.  Not one firefighter lifted a finger to save the Cranick home.  Why, you ask?  Because Gene Cranick is human, and forgot to mail in the $75 fee that pays for Fire Department services.  Videos of firefighters sitting in their fully equipped fire trucks indolently watching the house go up in flames as Gene Cranick pleaded that he would pay “anything they want” if they would just put out the fire can be found on the net (like here, and here to name a couple). The fire chief has the power to make on-the-spot exemptions, but he refused.  When asked by reporters, Mayor David Crocker reportedly said “If homeowners don’t pay, they’re out of luck.”  Well, no shit, way to win voter support ding-dong.  So, all that stood between Gene Cranick’s home standing tall or being reduced to a pile of charred ashes and debris? Seventy-five dollars ($75).  That’s it.

I still find it hard to believe that a firefighter could stand by and watch the home of another fellow human being burn to the ground.  Even when attempting to use the weak and over parlayed “just following orders” justification.  It didn’t work for the Nazis, it ain’t gonna work for firefighters, not in my book anyway.  I can say with certainty that I would not have been able to stand idly by and watch this family’s home, possessions and pets get destroyed like that.  I might get fired afterwards, but I am the one that has to live with myself in the end.  Besides, how often have one of us forgotten something?  How great does it feel when someone helps us out and gives us the benefit of the doubt, letting us slide that payment in a little late, or get that damage covered anyway even though they shouldn’t?  As long as we pay the bill then of course.  I am not saying the Cranick’s should get a free ride, but he admitted that he forgot to send the payment and offered to pay it right there, and more even.  He even went so far as to offer to pay “whatever they wanted”, just to get some help.  But still, the fire department, firefighters, fire chief, the town and all involved let the house burn to the ground.  Now, aside from Gene and Paulette’s pets dying, they have nothing left.  All of their possessions, memories, and belongings were destroyed in the fire, just like their home.  It’s going to cost them a lot more than $75 to recover from the selfish incompetence of the fire fighters, the fire chief and the mayor (lack of capitals on purpose).

Gee, I sure am glad all of you are perfect and I sure hope you never need help yourself some day.

I was watching a TV show earlier this evening, that was discussing various things about handicapped people, the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), and many various things that affect and effect the folk that need the help, like handicap parking.  OK, to get to the point, there was this one town (and I am sure there’s lots more like it) where people without the blue placard or handicap plates were parking in handicap spaces and no one was doing anything about it.  Not the police, or business owners, concerned citizens, etc.  With the exception of one brave lady, everyone pretty much ignored it and didn’t give a damn.  So it went, and this lady would confront people or take a picture of the car and license plate, etc.  But what got me was how the people who were parking illegally acted.  I mean they shouted obscenities, shoved this poor woman, grabbed her at times, verbally assaulted her and on and on.  I couldn’t help but think about what HUGE assholes these people were.  All this over a f***ing parking space, and one they shouldn’t be in anyways.  It is really sad that so many people were so lazy that they can’t be bothered to park a few extra feet away to ensure that someone who really needed to park close actually could.  Then, on top of that, when this lady politely called them out about it,  they act like such jerks.  I am still having trouble wrapping my head around the way they were acting.  This has always been a pet peeve of mine anyway, but on top of that, the lady doing this had a legitimate need for those parking places which is what drove her to try and police them herself since no one else would.  Her daughter is 21 years old, is autistic, blind and non-verbal.  I would think she deserves to NOT have to cross the damn street, you know?  Step up and be a real human being for once, leave the blue spaces for the handicapped people.  I know, I know, no one reading this would do such a thing, but maybe you can stop someone else from being a jerk.

Maybe it’s me, and please feel free to drop a comment and let me know what you think.  In fact, I am asking you to comment or hit the feedback button/contact form and let me know your thoughts.  I have working with what seems like a bazillion different operating systems over the years, to varying degrees of proficiency and intimacy.  I don’t just mean various versions of Windows either, I have worked with BeOS, DOS, Linux, MacOS, MenuetOS, NetWare, OS/2, SkyOS, UNIX, and Windows to name a reasonable sampling.  That list then breaks down into further releases, variations, versions and more.  The point I am trying to make here is that aside from the fact that I enjoy tinkering with operating systems, I have a pretty wide field of experience with many, many different ways to boot a computer.

The one big thing that I notice as a glaring difference between practically all of the operating systems I have tried and Windows is multitasking.  I mean true, let us do more than one thing at a time multitasking.  Not just do a little here and do a little there, the “hand off a lot, back and forth, and it’s real slow but we’re gonna call it multitasking while we entertain you with pretty pictures” kind of stuff.

My two primary operating systems these days are Windows and Linux, Windows 7 and Debian to be more precise.  Depending on where I am and what I am working on those can vary, but here at home, I tend to stick to those two as much as I can.  I have gone all Linux before and I loved it, and to be honest I’d love to do it again, but there are games I want to play and some development and music recording/production software that I can only run on Windows that I just don’t want to give up.  Therefore I run both.

Now, on to the crux of this long winded diatribe.  It seems like I can run many applications, daemons, processes and whatnot on my Linux boxen and it is happy to do so all day long.  In fact, I can overload it to the extreme and it will still function, albeit quite slowly.  No crash, no fuss, no muss, and once I stop some surplus processes it will come back and to a more or less normal state.  Except maybe if I am running Oracle, there seems to be no way to recover from running Oracle.

Compare this though, to my Windows box, where I can literally bring it to it’s knees with two … maybe three processes.  And I don’t just mean performance knees either, I mean the box will sometimes lock up, or even if not it never quite recovers (I suspect memory leaks maybe).  This gets especially if not exponentially worse if these two or three processes are attempting to access files on the same disk or partition.  It’s like Windows cannot stand the thought of sharing disk I/O with anyone, even itself.

Now, all that being said, let me make another note, this is not another Windows bashing article that are aplenty all around the ‘net these days.  These are my observations and frustrations that make me shake my head and wonder why slick marketing and strong arm business techniques always supersede quality and performance when it comes to sales (Beta versus VHS comes to mind).

What do you think?  Am I crazy?  Getting senile in my middle age? Or have any of you out there noticed similar things?

Look out!  The NAACP is going after those evil racist folk at Hallmark because they have an inspirational card for Graduates that talks about there being no limits on your future and that you can do anything you want.  The card is one of those electronic audio cards that plays a funny greeting or tune when you open it.  In this case, it’s a couple of cartoon characters talking about the uplifting message of nothing stopping you from achieving your dreams.  They go so far as to say that you could even take over the solar system.  I don’t think they meant that literally, they are just trying to make a point and inspire.

There is one phrase though, where the cartoon characters say “You black holes, you’re so ominous! [Other character laughs and says 'Ooooo!'] And you planets? Watch your backs.”  Kinda silly, right?  Yeah, but hardly racist though.  Now, I have listened to the audio from the card, and though it’s noisy and cartoony sounding, it sounds just like it is supposed to.  However, the NAACP has now come out and blasted Hallmark over this card (that has been out for over three years by the way) saying that what it really says is “whores” instead of “holes” and that it’s telling black people to “watch your backs”.  The president of the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP specifically stated that it sounds like “a group of children, laughing and joking about blackness … again”.  She says this with a straight face, and a very serious looking black woman behind her nodding her head with her eyes closed.  She then goes on to say that the card is “intentionally demeaning African-American women, by first calling them prostitutes and then threatening them”.  Threatening them?  Calling them prostitutes??  What planet is she from???

Folks, this is stupid and insane.  There is nothing on the card that even remotely resembles a black person, they are cartoon characters.  It even says stuff about graduates and the solar system all over the card.  How in the hell do these morons get to come out and claim racism?  Plus, if it’s so freakin’ evil, why didn’t they do something before now?  Where have they been for the last three years???  These moonbats ought to be locked up and thrown in jail for reading something into nothing and wasting everyone’s time.  It’s stupid crap like this that makes real racism claims that much harder prove and justify when they happen.

Thanks Consumerist for letting me know about this atrocity

Well, here we are in 2010 almost a year and a half after B. Hussein Obama took the reigns as President of the United States of America, promising change we can believe in.  Little did we know it was all of our change, spare change, and he was planning on taking as much of it as he could to finance socialist programs and pork projects.  Everyone complained like mad about how much George Bush spent while he was in office, over a term of eight years.  Here we have Obama who has already spent more in his first year than Bush did in his entire eight, and no one seems to say a word.  Kind of strange, but alas, I digress.  The main reason for my diatribe is that Nancy Pelosi, Queen of the Moonbats has now come out and said that the oil spill/disaster in the gulf was caused by none other than former President George W. Bush. Yeah, that was my reaction too.  I do however, want to know where ol’ W is hiding the time machine :P
